ARTIST'S BIO:

KARYN HITCHMAN

Karyn Hitchman is a painter in oils and a children's book illustrator based in Oamaru, New Zealand. Working in a classic realism style, she utilizes the slow drying time of oils to blend rich colours and textures directly on canvas. Her current portrait series, "The Aristocrats," explores the excesses of the 18th-century Louis XVI era, creating a sense of fantasy by inviting viewers to display her subjects as fictional ancestors in their own homes.

Her artwork is deeply shaped by her previous careers as a fashion designer/patternmaker and a South Island mountain guide. These experiences fuel her passion for painting people, nature, fabric, and historical costume. While primarily self-taught, Hitchman has refined her skills through private lessons with admired peers, and her paintings are now held in galleries and private collections worldwide.
