DENISE GREER (Wakatipu Weaver) - Artist Bio

Artist's Bio
Introducing woven works by Denise Greer, who weaves under the name 'Wakatipu Weaver' from the beautiful Wakatipu Region of Queenstown, New Zealand. Originally from Northland, New Zealand, Denise has called Queenstown home for the past 30 years.

She has been weaving with harakeke (flax) for close to 10 years, creating beautiful crafted Kete, Kono and Wall Hangings that honour traditional techniques while reflecting her deep connection to both the north and south of Aotearoa, New Zealand. However, she claims that there is always more to learn.

Denise first became interested in raranga after attending a couple of local workshops with weavers. Unable to travel away to study while raising 3 young children and helping to run the family farm, she instead chose to enrol and study on-line through the Hetet School of Maori Art over several years. Since then, she has created handcrafted kete, kono and wall hangings where she displays and sells her work at several galleries in the South Island.

Living on a small block of land means she's lucky enough to have established her own heritage harakeke plantation, nurturing a selected collected of plants. Many of the plants have been sourced locally, alongside several significant varieties from the National Flax Collection held by Manaaki Whenua - landcare research. This special plantation provides both inspiration and sustainable materials for her raranga practice.
