LEAVES AND LIGHT
‘It has been said that there are no straight lines in nature. But also within the organic, there is an underlying natural order, which I find fascinating. These paintings are the result of being immersed in the Sounds, as the artist in residence at Lochmara Lodge. This residency was an opportunity to explore the native plants in the area, drawing in study the shapes and forms. Almost like a scientist lost in the wonder of the foliage, looking closely at the symmetry, design and geometry. To celebrate in paint the basic structure or pattern, almost like looking at the architecture of each plant. Nicola Gibbons studied Painting, with a BFA from Otago Polytechnic in Dunedin. From this residency she carried on to other residencies in Germany and Italy. Her paintings are built with layers of varnish which give them a translucent quality.
