MURRAY SPARROW - Sculpture
"Wyrdwood"
Murray Sparrow discovered this particular piece of wood laying on an island of river-stones. Sitting in the middle of the Waitohi (Picton) Stream.
It was rich with possibilities.
While making drawings, Murray began the process of developing a sculpture. Two faces emerged from the textural pencil lines of his design.
The next process involved forging his creation from paper - to wood. Using power tools and chisels, Murray set about shaping, carving and creating the features of the 2 faces (characters).
In Murray's own words he explains, "The relief carving roughs out human associations - before drifting back into the wood, bringing its own stories of growth, strength and seasonal flow.
