DIANA NICHOLSON PLANK
Surrealism had a baby with Expressionism… You’d likely get a curious looking baby, creating a bunch of trouble with LOTS of unanswered questions & unfinished stories. My typical day goes something like this… A random thought or feeling gate-crashes a quiet (random) moment. The game of ‘catch & release’ is afoot… A game that can take me anywhere from a ‘moment to a month’ to make sense of what has gate-crashed my quiet space. I look under rocks, into my subconscious, into the rabbit’s eyes… searching their reflection, trying to decipher what these glimpses are trying to tell me - before I paint… Clumsily I strive to transcribe my interpretation of these thoughts &/or feelings onto canvas. Some pieces are unashamedly joyous, some, decidedly more profound. So, for all that… I don’t paint decoration. I paint for the joy of discovery, of exploration, for the challenge of the chase. |
