ARTISTS' BIO
MATTHEW WHITE
'I studied art formally in England during the mid-1980s at North East Worcestershire College, and later at Falmouth School of Art and Design. I work with various materials and techniques to produce jewellery, three-dimensional forms, and works on paper. Of the latter, my recent collage work is assembled from often repurposed cut paper and card and modified drawings that are produced using various paint and ink media, with mark-making elements supplemented with implements including homemade quills and modified brushes. My images are essentially - though often loosely - folkloric in content, utilising themes, iconography, and myths and legends that are stylistically influenced by folk and naive art, mediaeval manuscript illustration and stained glass work, heraldry, and early modern chapbook illustrations. The manner in which I approach art-making is always driven by process, and I endeavour to allow production techniques to be a visibly integral part of my finished work.'
